The Rule of Rules

Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men.Douglas Bader.

The wise man or expert understands the underlying reasons for the existence of the rule and is therefore able to determine if and when it is acceptable to ignore that rule. Therefore unless you understand why the rule applies, consequences of breaking and the rule and justify why it is irrelevant in the current circumstances and can be safely ignored. Then follow the rules.
